Overview

The North course at The Reserve Vineyards and Gold Club provides a links-inspired layout that is
distinctive from its sister South course. The Reserve, a semi-private golf club, is located 40 minutes away from downtown Portland, OR.

What Was Impressive

  • Course conditions are immaculate.

  • Greens rolls true.

  • Every hole is unique.

  • Distinctive 43,000 SF triple green complex shared by holes 1, 8, and 17.

  • The par 5 18th hole offers a classic risk/reward, with the green adjacent to a large pond. It i a perfect finishing hole to settle bets or break an individual scoring threshold.

What Could Be Improved

  • The wonky and short par-4 13th hole features a sharp dogleg left that requires the approach shot to soar over an elevated grassy mound onto a tiny green that slopes away to a collection area. It feels like the architect ran out of room and awkwardly fit this hole in. Try to cut the corner with your drive to the left side of the fairway and then use your 60-degree wedge to land your approach shot onto the small green that slopes front to back. After you blade your shot over the green, try to keep one of your next 3 chips on the green without it rolling back to your feet. After you 2-putt for your triple bogey, resist the urge to curse the course designer or Sir Isaac Newton for explaining gravity.

  • More comfort stations offering water.

How do you play the 13th?

The 13th hole is a "why do I play golf" kind of hole.  Keep your head up and use those mully's.

  1. For the left handed slicer or right handed pull hook player, your goal is to aim at the stick in the "middle" of the fairway and sling it back towards the hole.

  2. For the right handed slicer and left handed pull hook player, try to hug the tree line as close as you possibly can and hope it slices asap.

  3. For the straight hitter - Good Luck!  Aim towards the tree line and hope it stays on the line

  4. The perfect shot is a 260 yard drive just to the right of the trees that can leave you "pin high." Even after a perfect drive, please note that it is practically impossible to land the ball on the green and stop it.  Try to treat this like a par 5 and walk away with your head up if you find a way to par the hole.

  5. Lastly, if you ever wanted to skull a flop shot sitting behind the berm, this a perfect opportunity to play hero ball.  Take the flop and then get ready to yell "FORE" at the group ahead of you on the 14th green.
